Socialization and beauty messages from media [Video]


I ask my gender classes to think about the extent to which they think they are influenced by the media and how much agency they feel they have in interpreting media messages.  One of the topics I focus on is how we learn what our bodies should look like and how we "do" gender through our bodies.

The following video clip by Dove (called "Onslaught") is a good conversation starter:



This video also brings up some other interesting questions such as:
- What is Dove's intention in creating this video? How do we reconcile this video message with the fact that Dove also sells beauty products (and is owned by Unilever, which also owns Axe)?
- What pressure does this message put on parents?
